Grade: D
GAAAA! We wanted to like it. We tried our best... and failed. The cover is cool. The plot sounded good. The execution was awful. We can't even bring ourselves to write our own summary, so here is what Amazon has to say:
In a city of daimons, rigid class lines separate the powerful from the power-hungry. And at the heart of The City is the Carnival of Souls, where both murder and pleasure are offered up for sale. Once in a generation, the carnival hosts a deadly competition that allows every daimon a chance to join the ruling elite. Without the competition, Aya and Kaleb would both face bleak futures—if for different reasons. For each of them, fighting to the death is the only way to try to live.
So here's our beef- If you are going to write a Sci-Fi/ Fantasy, you MUST build the world. We didn't know if we were in the future or the past, or even on the planet Earth. They mention cell phones, yet they fight in a gladiator type setting. There is a coffee house, but time travel? or alternate reality? And don't even try to figure out who is telling a portion of the story. For a book with only 306 pages, there were at least 6 POVs! We lost count and interest quickly. We've looked at several review sites on this one, just in case we are off the mark. Looks like die-hard fans of Marr, love it. The rest of us... not so much. Oh well, it's early in the year and we have plenty more to read.
